2025 Ford Explorer vs. 2025 GMC Acadia

The Ford Explorer is one of the charter members of the crossover SUV segment. Throughout its production, it has essentially set the standard for performance, adaptability, and equipment. A comparison between the 2025 Ford Explorer vs. 2025 GMC Acadia clearly illustrates just how competitive the segment has become. On balance, the current Explorer and Acadia models are evenly matched in terms of performance, but the classic Ford crossover SUV still has plenty of advantages to offer. Follow along with us while we take a closer look at these two platforms.

Performance

Engine Output

At the base level, the 2025 Explorer and 2025 Acadia are very evenly matched. Explorer models use a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine making 300 horsepower. The Acadia employs a turbocharged 2.5-litre engine of its own that does make slightly more power. However, the Explorer can also be equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-litre V-6 that produces 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque.

Towing Capacity

Even with the small disparity in power output between the two SUVs, both have a maximum towing capacity of 2,268 kg. Ford has included a Class III towing package with all 2025 Explorer models. GMC Acadia owners will need to purchase its towing package separately on several trim grades.

Design

Passenger Space

Both SUVs have three rows of seats that can accommodate at least seven passengers a piece. Ford and GMC have delivered nearly identical dimensions for legroom across all three rows of seats. Additionally, the 2025 Explorer offers customizable LED interior lighting that can set the perfect mood for any drive.

Cargo Volume

Three-row SUVs like the 2025 versions of the Ford Explorer and GMC Acadia are well-known for their cargo-hauling capability. The current Explorer has 2,431 litres of cargo volume when the rear two rows are folded away. GMC does offer a little more cargo volume in the Acadia, but the difference is only a few hundred litres.

Technology

Advanced Connectivity

Ford has made wireless access to the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto suites of applications, meaning drivers and passengers can use many of their favourite apps while out on the road. GMC uses an Android or Google-based infotainment system with no mention of Apple compatibility. The Wi-Fi hotspot available in the 2025 Explorer can accommodate up to 10 devices at once.

Safety

Both automakers have developed excellent safety systems for their vehicles. The Ford Co-Pilot360® system makes an argument to be as comprehensive or better than the GMC version. Explorer drivers and passengers are protected by:

  • Lane-Keeping System
  • Evasive Steering Assist
  • Rear-View Camera
  • Hill Descent Control
  • Blind Spot Information System
  • Pre-Colision Assist w/ Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Automatic high beam headlights
